Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos 2005
Producer: Alana-Tokaj
Region: Tokaj
The ultimate handcrafted, Tokaji
wine! Late harvest Muscat, Harslevelu
and hand-picked, botrytized Zeta berries. Intensely fragrant, with notes of
citrus, honey and essence of Muscat fruit, framed by fresh floral touches.
Viscous and concentrated body, ultra sweet yet extraordinarily elegant, built on
a mouth wateringly zesty tangerine core; long, 45+ second finish. Very expressive, gorgeous, fascinating and
hedonistic. Aging potential: more than 50 years. Par excellence, the wine of the vintage at
the annual Tokaji Renaissance tasting. Two years barrel aging in new
Hungarian oak. Total production: less than
7 barrels from 55 acres. Bottling by hand.
Date of harvest: November-December, 2005
Winemaking:
We combined fermenting late harvest Muscat, Zéta and Hárslevelu base wines with handpicked, mostly Zéta botrytized berries, in a ratio of 1:1. Overnight soak, gentle pressing. The must fermented and aged in light toast level new Hungarian oak (Trust barrique) barrels for two years. No temperature control, no yeast cultures or any other additives during fermentation or aging. Single pass fining with complex protein prior to bottling by hand.

Wine Spectator's (WS) 100-point scale:
Wine Spectator tasters review wines on the following 100-point scale:
- 95-100 Classic: a great wine
- 90-94 Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style
- 85-89 Very good: a wine with special qualities
- 80-84 Good: a solid, well-made wine
- 75-79 Mediocre: a drinkable wine that may have minor flaws
- 50-74 Not recommended
Finished wines, reviewed from bottle in blind tastings, are given a single score. A score given as a range (e.g., 90-94) indicates a preliminary score, usually based on a barrel tasting of an unfinished wine. As of March 2008, we have switched to rolling four-point spreads for unfinished wines. For example, one wine may be scored 85-88, another 87-90, another 89-92. We believe this will better reflect the subtle differences between wines, and give our readers better information for their buying decisions. Most barrel tastings are blind; when they are not blind, this is specifically noted.
